CPS School Quality Rating Released - Barnard Continues Upward Trend
Greetings Barnard Families and Friends,
The new school ratings per the CPS School Quality Rating Policy (SQRP) were released this past Wednesday. We are pleased to announce that Barnard Elementary has achieved a "Level 1" rating for the 2015/2016 school year. This score indicates a continuing trajectory upward that started with the arrival of a new administration in February of 2013 when Barnard had been placed on probation. Since then, we have seen a strengthening of upward trends in both community and family engagement as well as academic growth at Barnard.
This rating is a more comprehensive assessment of a school's operation and effectiveness than previous years. Several complex components were added to the rating policy that reflect the hard work that has gone into the rebuilding of Barnard and its standing in the community.
Barnard has now established some strong foundational anchors that have improved operations of the school. The SQRP reflects an exceptionally high attendance rate (95.7%) and a solid Data Quality Index score of 99.8%. The school also received strong marks from teachers and students, ranking as "Organized" for improvement on the My School, My Voice Survey. To establish these elements so quickly speaks highly of the quality staff at Barnard and the invested, committed families in our school and community.
2013 marked monumental changes in our curriculum. Barnard staff received comprehensive training in the Common Core Standards, and engaged in rewriting math and reading curricula to align with the more rigorous expectations of the Common Core. All of these changes were new to Barnard teachers and students. This shift resulted in numbers that reflect an "adjustment year" for our students and teachers as the new curricula were implemented. Despite this adjustment period, Barnard still managed to score exceptionally high in reading growth as well as strong showing in 2nd grade attainment in both reading and math.
Since the end of last school year, we have been aware of our areas for growth and have been working diligently to address these. Our specific focus this year has been our math curriculum and targeting instruction aligned with student performance on the NWEA. We are providing comprehensive training for our staff in Common Core Math curriculum as well as creating a more intensive school wide approach to math interventions and enrichment. We have requested new, updated Common Core materials and are investing time and energy into developing math supports for all students including math intervention software, leveled math instruction in grades 6-8, and before and after school tutoring programs that focus on math skill building and critical thinking.
We continue to aggressively pursue grants and resources to better our school and to provide our community with the high quality education option it deserves. Recent staff additions, programming enhancements, ever-expanding after school options and an emphasis on quality school culture through the Healthy Schools Initiative and Arts Certification program are elements that support these efforts.
As we grow as a school and become more solid in our new Vision to become the "neighborhood school of choice," this achievement stands as an indicator of our hard work and an inspiration to continue to push forward and excel beyond our current standing. Thank you for being a part of our growth and reconnection to our community.
